Governance

Irlam and Cadishead Academy is a part of United Learning whose Trustees hold the ultimate responsibility for the governance of each United Learning school.

The Department for Education’s governance handbook 2020 identifies the essentials of effective governance as follows:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

United Learning’s Trustees delegate certain key roles and responsibilities to the school’s Local Governing Body (LGB) and these are set out clearly in our Scheme of Delegation which can be seen on the United Learning website.

Governing Body

At Irlam and Cadishead Academy, we recognise the dedication of our governors who invest a huge amount of goodwill and hard work in order to improve the education and life chances for every child at our school.

A Local Governing Body meeting takes place every term (6 per academic year).

The Chair of Governors can be contacted via the Clerk to the Governors: telephone 0161 537 1816 or email clerktogovernors@irlamandcadishead.org.uk

Our Academy Governors

I have been a Local Authority Governor at Irlam & Cadishead College for the last 18 years and chair of Governors since December 2015.

During that time, I have held roles as Safeguarding Lead and Lead for Looked After Children.   Originating from North Wales, I have lived in Irlam and Cadishead since 1977 when we settled in to our first married home together.  Our two children, both girls, came to this High School and they are now 32 and 29, living locally and working as a teacher and Physiotherapist with children of their own.

I retired in 2015, having spent the last 38 years working in local government, firstly as a Social Worker and finally as a Senior Manager, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.  I have worked in a number of councils and NHS across the North West. I retired as a Strategic Director in Salford , having been responsible for a whole range of council functions such as Culture, Communities, Social Care, Health Improvement and Corporate Services.  I was a board member for the Lowry for 6 years and worked closely with many, voluntary sector organisations and people in the NHS locally.

I love the sense of community locally and have been involved in all sorts of things over the years including being Governor at Cadishead Primary School, Salford Swimming Squad, singing in a Salford Choir, being a trustee of Salford CAB and a volunteer litter picker, as well as looking after my 2 grandsons three days a week.  When I became chair in Dec 2015, I was disappointed and saddened when the school let down our fantastic local students and was able to put in the hours to help improve the school and make faster progress. I want very much to contribute to helping the school, its staff and parents make the grade, in order that local children can fulfil their potential and am prepared to take some responsibility for making sure this happens.

My link role is in Safeguarding and Looked After Children.

As a teacher with over 12 years’ experience, and as a parent with 4 children who have all been educated in Irlam, I understand many of the issues that our children and families face today. I am passionate about education and how it can be used as a tool to build and empower young people to achieve all they can be.

I have worked in a variety of educational environments ranging from state to private secondary to charity supplementary schools, and have a particular interest in working with special needs children. I believe all students need to be developed and nurtured to build positive perceptions of themselves and their abilities, whilst also teaching them valuable life-skills such as; honesty, determination, patience and understanding.

I have lived in Irlam for over 20 years and have seen the area change dramatically over that time. As a governor I want to ensure that the children and young people of Irlam and Cadishead are ready and prepared to conquer whatever challenges they face in life, society and beyond.

My name is Lindsay Marsden and I am the Parent Governor for Irlam and Cadishead Academy. I am also the club secretary for Irlam Vale AFC junior football club.

I live in Irlam with my husband and 2 sons. My eldest will be going into year 11 in September and my youngest will be in year 6 at Irlam Primary. I believe all children should be proud to attend their local school instead of travelling outside of the area.

I have seen the school improve over the last few years and I am proud to be on the governing board.

I have been a governor at the college since January 2014. I have a passionate interest in education having been a parent, teacher, local head teacher and school improvement partner.

Since retiring in June 2010 I have pursued my other interest in politics. I was elected as member for Cadishead in 2012. In that role I have been a member of the Salford Council Children’s’ scrutiny committee and currently am the support member for Health and Wellbeing.

I am a lifelong resident of Irlam and Cadishead and retired from the Fire and Rescue Service in 2011 after 32 years of service.

I became a Governor at the school in 2012

I was elected as a Labour Councillor for Irlam in 2015.

My 3 children were all educated at Irlam and Cadishead High school/College and I currently have one grandchild who is attending the college.

Neil was born in Irlam, his father was a steelworker and mother a local librarian.

He attended Irlam primary or the council school as it was called in 1960.

Unsuccessful with his eleven plus exam at eleven he then attended the Alfred Turner school. He left in 1972 with five O levels and became an electrical engineering apprentice at British Nuclear fuels at Risley.

Whilst an apprentice he studied for his ordinary and higher national certificates.

On completing his apprenticeship and college studies, Neil went to Essex University to study telecommunications and computer engineering. Graduating in 1976 and together with a colleague he started Thurnall engineering in 1981 in Cadishead.

This became Opal Telecommunications in 1996 and was one of the founders of TalkTalk in 2002.

Today Neil is Director of Group Innovation.

He received an MBE for services to engineering in 1992 and a honorary doctorate for services to Telecommunications in 2009.

Neil is a chartered engineer and fellow of the institute of engineering and technology.

He is chairman of local Charity The Hamilton Davies Trust.
